Technical Explanation of the AT-1500 Series

Introduction

When designing tonearms as professional equipment, certain criteria must be met. These include not only fundamental performance but also high stability, durability, and ease of operation. The AT-1500 series tonearm, a long-standing bestseller for 14 years, has been revisited and re-engineered, resulting in the launch of the new AT-1500II series, similar to the previously introduced AT-1010. Below, we explain the structure and features of each component.

1. Anti-Skating Mechanism

1) Structure
The unique Audio-Technica mechanism, which combines a string and weight, has been further developed. It now adjusts the bias force dynamically in response to tracking error angle variations at the stylus tip during playback, ensuring more precise anti-skating operation.

2) Detachable Design
This mechanism is mounted on a dedicated base and can be easily removed using the included hex wrench when not needed.

2. Three-Way Locking Arm Base

To fix the arm height, a roller chuck system using large brass rollers is adopted. This system presses the arm shaft securely against the three sides of the conical base hole, ensuring a firm hold and eliminating play. Additionally, the shaft is lightly supported by a separate friction screw, preventing the arm from falling suddenly when the lever is released.

3. LT-12 Q-Damped Headshell

The body is machined from dense aluminum blocks, with anti-resonance measures implemented at the finger rest, upper body surface, and base of the head cylinder, achieving a fully resonance-free shell design.

4. Pure Silver Wiring

1) Head Lead Wires
Using high-purity (99.99%) silver litz wires similar to the AT-609, the structure reduces signal loss. The wires are directly soldered to the shell body with silver solder to further minimize transmission loss.

2) Internal Arm Wiring
The internal wiring, like the AT-1010, uses 99.99% pure silver covered with foamed Teflon. The separated parallel wiring reduces capacitance and crosstalk to a minimum. Felt is used inside the pipe to prevent resonance between the lead wires and the arm pipe.

Additional Features

1. Ring Weight with Locking Screw:
A ring weight designed to apply tracking force includes a locking screw to prevent accidental movement during rough handling.

2. Counterweight:
The counterweight has been enlarged and its dimensions streamlined to increase inertial mass and prevent frequency drops at the resonant frequency.

3. Mass Separation Structure:
The rear arm section is connected to the bearing unit via a large rubber damper, achieving damping effects on low-frequency resonance.

4. Tight-Lock Head Connector:
Adopting a collet chuck system, similar to the AT-1010, ensures the headshell is tightly fastened.

5. Enlarged Horizontal Bearings:
The diameter of the center shaft has been increased by 17% to 20%, with larger radial bearings used inside for improved durability.

6. Output Cord Retention:
Equipped with a ring to prevent disconnection of the output cord during turntable adjustments or arm height changes. The same low-loss transmission cable as the AT-1010 is used.
